Why We Looooove Texas
The grapefruit, of course. Southern Texas is in the news this February, National Grapefruit Month, for its unique varieties of those citrus studs, especially the Rio Starr. You didn’t know it was National Grapefruit Month??? Thankfully, there’s still a little time to celebrate. : )
The produce section is loaded with new, fresh and local citrus right now, and it seems like more arrives every day. If you do indeed love grapefruit, please try
- Locally Grown Oro Blancos (juicy and tart, and LOCAL)
- Our new Texan Rio Starrs (‘golly, this grapefruit shore is fine…’)
- Ruby Reds (the classy way to grapefruit)
- and the delicious, thick-skinned, ample Pomelo (Scroll down on the page for a delicious recipe for Pomelo and shrimp salad))
You can’t go wrong with tangerines right now. We have green-blushed Pixies, Mammoth Royals, Dancys and Honey varieties.
Just today we received a new harvest of local navel oranges, both loose and in 8# bags.
We are currently carrying three varieties of lemons: Meyer Lemons, Sorrento Lemons and…er, Lemon Lemons. This page has some interesting info about the lemon’s revered history in italy, and the origins of Sorrentos and Meyers. Meyer Lemons are hard to grow in most parts of the world, and we’ve been very lucky to carry local ones until just this week. You’ll see a price increase as we have to get them from out of the area now.
MORE citrus. We still have local kumquats, my personal favorite in the citrus section. We are also carrying Minneolas, Blood Oranges and Cara Cara Navels. Here is another person passionate about produce with some information on the color and nutrition of the red oranges (and why they taste like grapefruit).
According to “Prescription for Nutritional Healing”, the white skin around citrus, between the fruit and the rind, is very rich in bioflavonoids, which assist in the body’s uptake of vitamin C and work with vitamin C to improve cardiovascular health via tissues in the capillaries and boost the immune system. (Cough cough). Speaking of which…we wish healthy recoveries to our manager, Bryan, and assitant manager, Kevin, both of whom have been out this week due to unwellness. If Bryan were here, he could tell me if I used “whom” properly in that last sentence.
Be Well!!
