“Cruciferous Veg Again Linked to Bladder Cancer Protection”
Cruciferous vegetables, also called Brassicas, include Arugula, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Watercress, Bok Choy, Turnips and Turnip Greens, Mustard Greens, Collard Greens, Mizuna, Rutabaga, Napa Cabbage, Daikon, Horseradish, Radish, Kohlrabi and Kale.

Another recent study shows how eating your greens can help keep you healthy. It is one of the first studies to distinguish raw from cooked food, and they link their results only to the former.
From the article:
“The anti-cancer properties of cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli and cauliflower, are not new and previous studies have related these benefits to the high levels of active plant chemicals called glucosinolates. These are metabolised by the body into isothiocynates, and evidence suggests these are powerful anti-carcinogens. The main isothiocynate from broccoli, for example, is sulforaphane. “
These isothiocynates appear to act against carcinogens and are also linked to reduced rates of cancer in breasts, lungs, ovaries and prostate glands. So, take care of yourself, would you? Have some broccoli with that cigarette.
Just a reminder:
“Rutgers scientists have found that the curry spice turmeric holds real potential for the therapy and prevention of prostate cancer, especially when combined with certain vegetables. The researchers tested turmeric, also known as curcumin, along with phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC), a naturally occurring substance especially abundant in a group of vegetables that includes watercress, cabbage, winter cress, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, cauliflower, kohlrabi and turnips. “The bottom line is that PEITC and curcumin, alone or in combination, demonstrate significant cancer-preventive qualities in laboratory mice, and the combination of PEITC and curcumin could be effective in treating established prostate cancers,” said Ah-Ng Tony Kong, a professor of pharmaceutics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. ”
