Melons love us here in Chico.

Starting in the next couple of weeks you’ll be able to taste some of the best melons in the world at the co-op or any of our local farmer’s markets.

When it comes to choosing the perfect melon, I start with my nose. Once you’ve selected a melon that’s neither rock-hard nor squishy, give the end a strong whiff. If you can smell melon, that’s a good one. On melons like canteloupe and honey dew, make sure that the distinct green marks on the rind have faded. Also, if a melon has a slightly flattened end, that usually indicates it had a chance to ripen while still on the vine, and that’s good as well. Our Kevin also recommends tapping melons. If you get a satisfying deep thump, it’s ripe. For honeydew, shake them, and if you hear loose seeds rattling, it’s ready.

And don’t forget that we have fresh-picked nectarines, plums, peaches, pluots, cucumbers, squash, beans, onions, garlic and tomatoes coming in from local growers DAILY. See you at the store!

The Splendid Table: Locavores

The Splendid Table: Locavores: 15 Participants from across the country with the goal of eating 80%...

Chef Ramsay Gives Local Produce A Celebrity Endorsment

Chef Ramsay Gives Local Produce A Celebrity Endorsment

Free Chico Composting Workshops

Free Chico Composting Workshops

"Mutation: it is the key to our evolution.
